"In
the work I do I strive to embody a sense of deeper
or sacred realities that touch the human spirit, and
that resonate with that part of us which is often
overlooked and overwhelmed by our fast -paced, materialistic
and secular post-modern world. My work then is the
attempt through form, to describe the formless and
timeless, and is in the tradition of artists concerned
with these contemplative and/or spiritual matters
such as Mark Tobey, Antonie Tapies, Mark Rothko and
more recently the British artists Rebecca Salter and
Robyn Denny.
"I
use a traditional hand made gesso ground which provides
a luminous and light reflective surface for the oil
paint. I both add and subtract layers or partial layers
of paint, working with a variety of methods including
glazes, washes and chemical reactions, often removing
whole sections of the painting to allow other areas
to "speak".
"I
use a very restrained palate, and often scratch into
the surface of the painting with strong angular lines
to provide a counterpoint of structure to the spontaneous
and fluid aspects of the painting. I'm attempting
through the simplicity of colour and content to allow
and give space to the experience and presence of something
other or unknown."
