Free Listing in Bristol Green Pages **
There
is a new directory being published in Bristol this autumn,
called the Green Pages, and it will include up to 4 free
listings for 'ethical, sustainable businesses'. If you think
your shop might qualify (and we understand from them that
small local independent businesses are fair inclusions),
then visit their website www.bristolgreenpages.co.uk or
ring them on 0870 486 6435. You can also take out an advertisement
if you want. Deadline is 13th October. The Christmas Steps
Area should generate quite a few listings!
Neighbourhood
Watch
After
a spate of break-ins and burglaries in the area, some of
the local traders are starting a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme.
This scheme is for both residents and businesses. To find
out how to register your property/business, then contact
Tamsin at the Steps Gallery.
Planning
Applications
-
St Michael's Church
Easyrunners on Horfield Road have applied for planning permission
to turn St Michael's Church into a running centre, where
as well as selling running equipment, there will be a treatment
room and other facilities for the sport.
-
Colston Hall
The planning application for the new foyer of the Colston
Hall is under consideration at the moment. A model can be
seen in the present foyer.

Fosters Almshouses
These fine buildings belong to Bristol Municipal Charities,
and their director came to the CSAA July meeting to explain
the plans. David Jones said that the buildings were now
outdated for the housing of the elderly and could not be
easily adapted to modern standards. They are therefore proposing
to sell them. There was much discussion about the future
of the Chapel, an important part of the Colston Street scene.

Lower Colston Street
A year ago, CSAA discussed with Highways improvements to
Upper Colston Street to reduce the impact of traffic and
make it a more welcoming place for shoppers. These were
rejected by Traffic Management, and we were advised that
proposals were most likely to be successful in harness with
the Colston Hall improvements. CSAA therefore submitted
drawings for lower Colston Street to slow traffic and soften
the dreariness of a long straight street with tall buildings
(see picture below). On the basis that there would be no
funds from the City towards this, the proposal had to be
affordable. We are now getting the drawing checked and costed
by a traffic engineer, in the hope that it may be included
in Phase 2 (see above) of the Colston Hall project.
